ABOUT EVENT: WTISTD 2021

Save The Date

On Monday, 17 May 2021, the ICT SMME Chamber in partnership with the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies, will host the virtual commemoration of World Telecommunication and Information and Society Day (WTISD). The Minister and Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Ms Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams and Ms Pinky Kekana will lead this six-hour virtual commemoration scheduled from 10h00 – 16h00.

Accelerating Digital Transformation in challenging times

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) theme, “Accelerating Digital Transformation in challenging times​”​, this virtual event will see local and international speakers from the ITU and ATU as well as other organisations engaging on pertinent issues that seek to advance digital transformation, particularly through increased broadband penetration, harnessing the growth of SMMEs, digital skills development and infrastructure deployment; amongst others.

What We Are About

WTISD is an ITU event that is celebrated annually by ITU member states to observe the founding of the ITU in 1969. Through observing WTISD 2021, South Africa will demonstrate the power of telecommunications and ICT, as well as its monumental impact on societies and the country’s economy. The 2021 commemoration comes against the backdrop of Covid-19 which spiralled in 2020, the award of Covid-19 emergency spectrum by ICASA to qualifying operators, the spread of fake news around the pandemic and 5G technology, leading up to the most unfortunate and uninformed destruction of telecommunication infrastructure.
